Open Your Heart and Home

Habitat 4 Paws relies on foster parents to provide the best and safest care for our rescued animals. Fosters provide a temporary home for pets in our care while they await their forever home. As a foster you are part of the entire process including the home trial and adoption finalization.

The benefits of fostering

There are so many benefits to opening your home and heart to a dog or cat in need.

Why foster?

Many of our dogs and cats cannot be adopted immediately. The only way we can save these animals and help them get the care they need to be ready is with the help of foster homes. Key requirements as a foster include:

  • Provide a safe, clean and caring environment for an animal in need.

  • Provide food, water, litter, toys and shelter

  • Provide excersize and socialization if needed.

  • Monitor for physical and mental wellbeing

  • Transport to and from any necessary vet appointment (or if unable a foster coordinator can help with transport)

  • Help get the word out about your foster by having them attend one of our monthly adoption events.

Common questions about fostering

  • Do you do same day adoptions?
At times, we do adopt same day, however not on the spot at an event. If you decide to move forward with a home trial, we can finalize if you are positive it is a match. We recommend taking the home trial period to be sure since adoption fees are not refundable.
  • What is provided during the home trial?
We will provide food for the foster during the stay and often times a few of their favorite toys. For cats, a litter box is not provided. You will need to provide that in your home.
  • What age do I need to be to adopt?
Adopters must be 21 and have a valid Texas driver’s license or a state-issued ID that matches the home address. If new to the area, a utility bill in the name of adopter will suffice.
  • What if I rent at my current residence?
Renters must present proof of pet deposit or landlord approval to have a pet. This is not required for the home trial, only when you decide adopt.
  • Will you help my current pet(s) adjust during the home trial?
We have adoption behavior counselors at our rescue that can help give pointers on how to ensure a safe transition for your new pet. They will also provide suggestions for things to try for each pet.
